Myakka State Forest in Englewood, FL, runs along the majestic Myakka River and stretches out over untouched wetlands, hammocks, pinelands, and prairies. 2. Hiking, Biking, and Horseback Riding Trails

Discover the astounding beauty and the fauna and flora on 40 miles of multi-purpose trails that wind through the park. Hike, bike, and horseback ride through natural pine flatwoods and live oaks and observe many species of indigenous wildlife along the way. Explore the wilderness on paved, sandy, and hardpacked roads that run along the banks of Myakka Lake, past grassy marshes, and through hammocks.

The park also offers 12 miles of equestrian trails through the forest. The North and South Loop trails are included in the Florida Forest Service’s Trailwalker and the equestrian Trailtrotter programs.

3. The Canopy Walkway

The walkway is suspended 25 feet above the ground and stretches for 100 feet through the treetops. It’s the first of its kind in the country where nature lovers can observe wildlife up close in the palm and oak hammock. A 75-foot tower provides magnificent views of the surrounding landscape, and you can glimpse hawks, eagles, and vultures from above on the top of the trees.

4. Paddling

The Myakkahatchee Creek that flows into the Myakka River, designated as an Outstanding Florida Water, creates perfect opportunities for paddlers to observe the wildlife and appreciate the natural surroundings. Gliding along, you will experience the beauty of the shore from the water and see plenty of wading birds and other water creatures. You can bring your own canoe or kayak or rent one from the park.

5. Primitive Camping

For an astounding wilderness experience, hike or paddle to the primitive campsites throughout the forest. The remote sites are situated along the waterways and provide scenic views of the water and the surrounding forest. Sit around a campfire, listen to the sounds of the forest, and marvel at the brightness of the stars.
